The blank and the blank!

I spent the majority of this week discovering new bands and getting new music. However, I kept running into the same problem after I uploaded the albums to my ipod:

It's impossible to differentiate between bands because their names are so freaking similar! They usually follow one of the following formats:

1) The ________
2) ______ and the ________
3) ______ (animal) or (animal) _______
4) The _____  _____  ______ [3 words that are usually totally unrelated, like The Thor Baking Box]
5) Some variation of 1, 2, 3 or/and 4

It’s like bands use the same algorithm when coming up with their name. How am I supposed to tell the difference between the Knee Kicking Hares and the Shin Hitting Rabbits?! Potato Helicopters vs the Starchy Planes?

So rather than spend too much time thinking about it, I’ll just be over here listening to Deerhunter. Or is it Deerhoof? Maybe it’s Deer Tick? No, I’m sure it’s The Dear Hunter. Perhaps it's the Dear & The Departed? I DON’T EVEN KNOW ANYMORE. Maybe, perhaps, possibly there's a woodland creature somewhere in the name....

What were you listening to this week? Using the above formats, what would you name your band? I’m a member of The Hulk Scone Rectangle, the musical rivals of The Thor Baking Box (TBB). Ooooohhh, game on TBB. Game on.

Incoming:

A rather slow mail week again. My mailbox is starving people! STARVING! Just kidding, that fatbox could use a diet. I'm thinking no carbs from now on—those sparkles from Kay's letter last week practically caused it to fall into a sugar coma. No, mailbox! A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips. You'll regret it. And I am not holding your hand while you sob into a tub of ice cream again.

A postcard from Julie. I'm SO glad Julie knows what our friendship is about because if I have to put in effort, I just... zzzzzzzz. Bah.

A letter from Vanessa in Illinois

A letter from Natasha in New Mexico

A letter from Ginger in Washington

A letter from Michelle in South Carolina

Outgoing:

A letter to Holly in Texas
Just the one outgoing this week, but will you check that out?! That is a properly oriented moustache. Turns out you can teach a weirdo new tricks. YAY!

If you have any music recommendations, let me know! I'm happy to add more artists to my confusing-band-names-that-I'll-totally-mix-up list.

I hope you all have a great week!

  1. Glad to see you got the mustache mystery sorted out. It was so out of hand that I started to think guys on the street were wearing them wrong. In your face TBB. I am The Hulk Scone Rectangle all the way. I have been a fan since they were playing in their mother's garage.

  2. I think that I just shed a few tears. Seeing a postcard from me in this post and then another postcard plus a letter from me again in the previous post... That's just too much!

Maybe I should bombard you with postcards and notecards and letters every week, that way I would be ALL OVER YOUR BLOG ALL THE TIME! Doesn't that sound exciting?! And then I could rule the whole world.

So, when are you writing me back? You won't make me wait until December, will you? :P

    1. All I have to say is patience grasshopper, patience..... besides, who says that I am not writing you back right now/already sent a letter/eaten some sushi/wrestled a rhino this week? Just to make things easier, two of those things are in fact true....oh, this is university-level quizzing here!

    2. You ate sushi without me?! I hope you saved me a few pieces and sent them / will send them with your next letter (still haven't figured out which statement is true between the first one and second one).

    3. After spending the whole day thinking about it, I came to the conclusion that you're currently writing me a letter. If you had already mailed one, it would be pictured along with Holly's letter under "outgoing", no?

    4. Why doesn't anyone believe me when I say that I wrestled a rhino?!

Hmm... that's some pretty solid reasoning for "currently writing me a letter," but what if I just dropped in the mail after I did my post (ergo, it would be considered the outgoing for another week?)? Only time will tell..... ;) I know I'm being annoyingly coy, and I hope you find it endearing!

    5. Endearing? Not at all, but you know I forgive you everything! Especially since you sent me those declicious cardboard tasting scones in the post... :D

  3. Oh, we should start a band together and call it The Wet Sushi! Or The Ketchup Squirrel? Or Sushi and the Squirrel?

    1. We should be the Ketchup Squirrel, and then have Sushi and the Squirrel be our experimental side project. We'll be known for bringing out sheets of seaweed in the middle of our set.

    1. Hee! I love this comment.

I also absolutely agree, though getting the oil and ketchup out of your hair after one of their shows is annoying.

  6. The Hulk Scone Rectangle? I'm thinking....indie rock meets hair band? :P But I'm glad my card didn't send your box into too much of a sugar coma. Diets are so much harder on boxes than people. I mean, when girls diet, all you do is lay off sugar, eat more vegetables, balance your carb intake with some kickin' cardio. What do mailboxes do? Well, their exercises are so much more intense, and how are they supposed to control their carbs and good fats? It's not like they can tell the mailman, hey, I'm on a diet--I'm supposed to be limiting my sales paper and laying off the junk mail. What are you tryin' to do, kill me?
But lately, I'm mostly listening to not new music. Early Madonna, Carole King, the Doors. On that note (and because I'm still on a glitter high), my band is called Sparkle Girls, we do glamor pop, and yes, we wear go go boots. CUTE go go boots. Hey, maybe we can go on tour together?

    1. Oh you better believe that the Hulk Scone Rectangle have the indie rock slash hair band market cornered. It's all ours! Our guitarist also plays a mean saw at one point and you should see our cover of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me." Blows the roof off the flipping joint! :D

Also, did you know that our tour with the Sparkle Girls was our highest grossing tour? We TRIPLED our profits from $20 to $60. Woah, not everyone can say that! What was your favourite moment from that tour?

I am SO glad that you understand the mailbox dieting dilemma! I mean, the mailman doesn't care that its on a diet! It's like the mailbox is smack dab in the middle of a KFC and you can try to eat healthy there, but everyone knows that there's nothing healthy at a KFC! What's a fat mailbox to do?!

  7. My mailbox is starving. So sad :(

I would name my band Platypus & the Heebie-Jeebies (my brother actually suggested that one)

    1. Definitely sad! Poor, starving mailbox!

Platypus & the Heebie-Jeebies is a great name. I'm thinking indie rock meets comedy meets Billy Talent meets Chuck Berry. How far off the mark am I? :)

  8. Mail for me! *flail* :)

Speaking of music, I mailed you a mix cd, I think you should have gotten it by now but you never know with the mail! Maybe I should try including scones with my mail to bribe the post office to mail it faster...who doesn't like scones?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Who doesn't like scones? The answer to that is clearly NO ONE. EVERYONE loves scones. At least, I hope they do.... if they know what is good for them.... :)

Mix CD! I hope it's full of bands with difficult to remember names! Looking forward to recieving it.

  9. How's about The Flaming Octopi? Or Hystreonics Anonomous? Or even Wellington's Cake Slide? You know, I bet there's someone reading all these, looking for a band name!
You'll be pleased to hear that I have FINALLY written a reply to your last letter! FINALLY. I'm super super sorry about the wait, you letter box must be starving by now! A letter box cannot live on sparkles alone! I hope the tea will make up for it.

    1. Those are great suggestions, and my favourite is Hystreonics Anonomous! That's going to give the spellcheck of journalists and music reviewers a field day! Hee! I hope that if someone has the gumption to use a band name from this post, they credit the commenter because that sound be worth lifetime admission into shows, don't you think? :)

Sparkles AND TEA?! My mailbox will be spastic with joy.

  10. Hahahaha, Laura! There's no better way to start a week than coming here and reading your posts, really. Thanks for always stealing a smile/chuckle/laugh from me :p.

As for your question ... mmmm ... I've actually been listening to old bands; or well, not OLD, but not new ones. I don't like any of the songs that are currently played here, so I stick to my favorites: Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Pulp ... I've also been listening to The Like, Marlena Shaw (California Soul), Madcom (Beggin'),REM.

Oh, oh! Quick question! Have you ever heard of Rednex, Laura? David swears he's never heard them before. They had a couple of hits in Argentina. I'd always thought they were American, but they're actually Swedish. If you don't know them, please, check out: "Old Pop in an Oak" and their version of "Cotton-Eyed Joe", hahaha.

Hope you have an awesome week, girl! ;D

    Tight hugs!
